Polar Express Pajama Parade

We had a Polar Express Pajama Parade this week at school. Scholastic Reading Club /Classrooms Care has an amazing Pajama Program- more information on that can be found here and I encourage you all to look at it, it really was such a great experience both for us and for the kids.  We had our Kindergarten and First Graders bring new pajamas to donate (if they wanted to) and Scholastic will match each pair of pajamas with new book for a child in need- how wonderful, right? We had so many cute nightgowns and pajamas donated in our class, just look at this adorable Hello Kitty Christmas nightgown.

We sent a note to parents telling them about it and letting them know that if they wanted to they could create a "train car" for their child to wear in our Kindergarten and First Grade Polar Express Parade. All the children could wear their own pajamas (all day) and most also had a "train car" (made out of a cardboard box).  So cute!!

We made handprint "antlers" and everyone who wanted to joined in the parade. I had the kids trace each others hands for their antlers - that was really cute to watch!! We paraded all through the school and all the other grades came out to cheer as we went by - really fun for all.  We ended up in the Cafeteria with hot cocoa for all. Thank you to our PTA for providing the milk and cocoa and to our Cafeteria manager for getting it ready for us!

After the cocoa we took our pajama and nightgown donations up to Santa (who was sitting on the stage) to have him put them in the Pajama Polar Express boxes. I loved the idea of the kids taking something to Santa. It was really a fun experience for the children as well as the teachers and parents and relatives who participated and/or came to watch. We plan to do it again next year and have ideas about how to include other grades as well.

Oh, I plan to talk about phonics and reading in future blogs - I just really wanted to share our fun Pajama Polar Express Parade. The whole thing was absolutely adorable and meaningful!!
